Venue Information
Upon its opening in the summer of 1958, the theater with its round stage boasted the largest theatrical tent in the United States, according to one source. Each summer season lasted about 15 weeks during which approximately nine musicals were staged. Many shows featured name stars from Broadway and Hollywood with a resident chorus and orchestra supporting the productions, writes Stephen Herring in his book, "Framingham: An American Town."
Shows included "New Girl in Town," starring Joan Blondell, "The King and I," with Arlene Dahl and Fernando Lamas, "Kiss Me Kate" with Patrice Munsel, "Oklahoma!," "Pajama Game," "Gypsy," "West Side Story," "Guys and Dolls," "Porgy and Bess" with Cab Calloway, "A Joyful Noise" and, appropriately enough, "Carousel."
Headliners included Jack Benny, Danny Kaye, Liberace, Dan Dailey, Ann Blyth, Ann Corio, John Raitt, Gordon and Sheila MacRae, Jerry Lewis, Jayne Mansfield, Rock Hudson, Howard Keel, Hugh OBrian, Anita Bryant, Lloyd Bridges, Ginger Rogers, Nat King Cole, Anthony Perkins, Ray Milland, Bert Parks of Miss America fame and Gisele MacKenzie.
Herring notes that on occasional Sundays the Carousel hosted concerts by popular musicians. These included the Association, Frank Zappa, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Chicago, George Shearing, Sarah Vaughan, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Tom Jones and the aforementioned Mr. Hendrix.
