Venue Information
This magnificent concert hall has seating for over 2,000 people and has been Preston's Premier entertainment venue since it opened to celebrate the 1972 Preston Guild.
The Grand Hall glory years were without a doubt the seventies and early eighties with a regular programme featuring top drawer entertainers and performances. The Guild Hall was "the place to play" and attracted both national and international stars of stage and screen including Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Morecambe & Wise, David Bowie, Elton John, Meatloaf, Jackson 5 and Queen - to name but a few. A monumental makeover between 1997 and 1999 gave the complex a well earned facelift where the whole building benefited from a multi-million pound refurbishment and with that a rise again in top class artists and sell-out gigs including The Beautiful South, Streophonics, Russell Watson, Katherine Jenkins, Embrace, Richard Ashcroft and great comedy from the likes of Jim Davidson, Jack Dee and Peter Kay.
Over the last 30+ years, Preston has become the prominent place for the sporting fraternity. The versatility of the Guild Hall complex offered a unique experience for sporting events and championships as it became host to a plethora of prevalent activities including badminton, darts, boxing, snooker, bowls, and, very popular in the past, wrestling. Saturday afternoon sporting superstars, the likes of Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks performed to packed houses gaining huge television audiences as well as sell out auditoriums until British Wrestling with its raw urban edge lost out to their muscle-bound choreographed American counterparts.
Other ratings winners and money spinners, especially with the birth of colour TV, include snooker, bowls and darts as fans still flock to see their idols operate in the flesh. The Preston Guild Hall is still the favoured host for great national and international sporting events including Snooker and Badminton, benefiting from national television coverage.
